Here we have a 1938 Martin 00-40H, serial # 69131. The guitar was played, loved, and cared for by Uncle Joe Johnson. We purchased the guitar directly from the Johnson family. Uncle Joe Johnson purchased the guitar directly from Martin in 1938 for the amount of $400.00. The guitar has a wonderful history tied directly to the origins of country & bluegrass music, radio programming, and the Grand Ole Opry.
Included with the guitar is an autograph album that was kept by Uncle Joe's wife Odessa. The album includes approximately 60 signatures from the Bluegrass & Country music pioneers. The autographs all seemed to be obtained from a few performances at the Grand Ole Opry sometime between 1954 and 1956. The list of autographs reads like a Who's Who of performers, band leaders, managers, and disc jockeys. Many of the autographs are made out to Uncle Joe & Odessa. The autograph book is definitely a valuable piece and would easily stand on its own in any collection. However, we felt that this autograph book, along with its ties to Uncle Joe's guitar should stay together so that the history of this man and his guitar will not be forgotten.

The guitar itself is a model that represents Martin's crowning point, only bested by the 42 and 45 series. The 00-40h was originally designed and setup to be played "Hawaiian" style, or a lap guitar, with flush frets and a bridge setup for this style of playing. The 00-40h has the gorgeous pearl binding and soundhole appointments that subtly announce, this guitar is the cream of the crop. This guitar being a workhorse for a musician and radio man had seen its share of use and was sent back to the Martin factory sometime in the 1970's. Here it received a facelift including a new belly bridge, a larger pickguard (one that accommodated Johnson's playing style), and a fresh coat of finish. In the eyes of many these works may have hurt the guitar, but to Johnson it was simply a matter of keeping up the tool of his trade.
Currently the guitar is still setup to be played Hawaiian style. The guitar could be converted to Spanish style with a new nut and the addition of frets. Currently there is some damage on the back including a few cracks along the bottom edge and another that is near the right edge of the back. The inlay strip along the bottom edge of the side is curled and could stand to be reseated. The guitar comes with a newer hardcase.
This is a list of the names that we could make out, there are about 20 signatures that we couldn't identify. The names that are in this book include many that are in the Country Music Hall of Fame and many others that helped establish the Grand Ole Opry into the place it is known today. The autographs are 100% authentic.
