Today I am offering the original year production of

The Gibson CF-100E  [Cutaway Florentine Electric].

From the inside heal numbering [8797 11], it appears to have been not only the first year of production of the CF-100E but the 11th guitar made. There are NO other markings on the guitar.

I have had this guitar as my personal instrument for over five years but it has a long history, coming from a country legend, now deceased who played fiddle with George Jones [you can see him on the Rocking Horse video]. He also played with Aaron Tippen and Kenny Chesney.....That is all I can say at this point.....

It has had Gibson modern tuners put on the guitar, but I have the original tuners

[that are in excellent condition including the buttons!]

and will put them on the guitar before shipping it out.

The Sunrise pickup is not part of the package, though if you want it, we might be able to work something out.

You can see the original hard shell case is purple and though the case has seen better days is better than the soft shell cheaper version. Right now the volume and tone knob are connected to an internal microphone pickup inside the body and the neck pickup goes directly to the Gibson mounted 1/4" jack in the lower bout of the guitar. The Mic pickup is attatched to the end-pin jack.

A great and novel thing about this instrument is that it has NEVER had a strap button installed in its heal. It has always been played "Elvis Style" with the strap being located on the neck. It came that way and when that leather strap broke [I will include it with the sale...] I just kept it vintage original and played it old style with a strap that I bought for that purpose.

Here is some info on it:

  • Year: 1951

  • Manufacturer: Gibson

  • Model: CF-100E

  • Case: Original Hard Shell

  • Color: sunburst top, dark back and sides

  • Condition: Excellent

  • Description: Gibson CF-100E Model Flat Top Acoustic-Electric Guitar (1958), made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, number 8797 11 which puts it as the 11th guitar made in 1951; the first year of producion, sunburst top, dark back and sides finish, mahogany body and neck, spruce top, original hard shell case. Here is a fine example of an uncommon Gibson flattop from the 1950's, the CF-100-E. this is a most unusual guitar for its time, as the concept of a cutaway flattop with a factory pickup system guitar was still quite novel in the late 1950's. Common today, these features were radical for 1951 making this a guitar very much ahead of its time. While the instrument is generally similar to the non-cutaway LG-2, it is considerably fancier in appearance and has a rather more upscale feel. The top is triple bound and the back and fingerboard are single bound, the headstock carries a pearl Gibson logo and crown inlay and The rosewood fingerboard is inlaid with pearloid trapezoids. Gibson offered this model as either a straight acoustic guitar as the CF-100 or with an ingenious added magnetic pickup as the CF-100E, and both were sold in limited numbers throughout the 1950's but are fairly rare today. The larger J-160E which uses the same electronics on a non-cutaway Jumbo body is better remembered, mostly due to extensive use by The Beatles in the 1960's, but it had a laminated top whereas teh CF-100E had a solid spruce top. Today this very attractive, forward-looking guitar makes perfect sense and we can only wonder why the players of the 1950's failed to warm to this excellent design.Overall length is 39 1/2 in. (100.3 cm.), 14 1/4 in. (36.2 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 1/2 in. (11.4 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.).

  • Now for the beauty marks on this instrument. It has plenty of pick marks
[see the picture close ups] where over aggresive
[or a drunk Nashville songwriter famous for such extravagent misdameanors],
and the back of the neck has great gripping where a capo has been used fervently back before the days of Kisers. I personally love the way it feels with these "modifications".
Feel free to email me at minorprophetstudio@earthlink.net if you want more info, can't wait for the end of the auction or need particular shots of the guitar.
