1928 GIBSON NICK LUCAS ACOUSTIC
Item Description
This extraordinary and uber rare Gibson Nick Lucas is an incredible acoustic guitar.
These guitars were the premier Gibson acoustic of the late 20's , and the first ever "artist endorsed" Gibson.
This one has stock rhinestone peghead decorations, which is very very rare, but not unheard of for Gibsons of this era.
The guitar plays great with light gauge strings, sounds spectacular ( eats a normal L-oo for lunch) and
looks fantastic, although it does have a normal amount of playing wear.
It does have numerous very tight body cracks.
The first few frets have minor wear on the fretboard itself.
Appears to be 100% original , with the original hardshell case.
Way cool " banjo style" tuners.
The original truss rod cover and screws are present and in good shape, in spite of the picture of the peghead where the trussrod cover is removed.
Please see all the pictures.
Please click on the pics to enlarge.
Apparently original hardshell case in good useable condition. All latches are in good condition.
Current Vintage Guitar book value is 12,000 - 15000.....
This is a no reserve auction , with an opening bid of ninety nine cents.
Please read the general Nick Lucas Guitar information following the photographs.....
Production: (no pre-1937 production numbers) 1937:35, 1938:15, 1939:3, 1940:2, 1941:2
General Comments: A very inconsistent model as Gibson seemed to change their mind about the Nick Lucas guitar specs often, making Nicks difficult to accurately date. Additionally in 1928 Gibson printed up a bunch of Lucus serial number labels, and then used them over the next 4 or 5 years. So a later 1933 Nick Lucas guitar could easily have a label printed in 1928 with a 1928 serial number. Therefore dating a Nick Lucus guitar by serial number really does not help prior to 1935. But one thing standard to all Gibson Nick Lucas models is the body depth of at least 4.5 inches and all have the custom Nick Lucas label in the soundhole.
Usually no pickguard. Most Nick Lucas guitars have serial numbers indicating 1928 or 1929 - date guitar by spec not by serial number.
Late 1928 Gibson Nick Lucas guitar specs:
By the end of 1928 the peghead "The Gibson" logo was inlaid in pearl. Also the pyramid bridge changed and the sound hole perfing changed to ivoroid rings of alternating white, black, white plastic. Extra bridge pin deleted. Fingerboard inlays changed to a large varied pattern with notched diamond at the 3rd fret (Roy Smeck Radio Grande style) - no longer included a star at the 3rd fret and was less delicate than the original Lucas design. Often has a raised (archtop style) pickguard. Gibson continually made changes in the design of the Lucas model during this period. These changes were often arbitrary and conflicted with catalog descriptions continually through the years of production (1927-1940).
Late 1928 to 1933 gibson added a fleur de lis inlay on the peghead and were 14 3/4" wide . The gibson logos were inlaid on most of them ( not silkscreened ) , they also started making nick lucas guitars with rosewood back and sides , they had 12 frets clear of the body in 1929 .
The Nick Lucas Special went through numerous changes in body shape, body size, body woods and bridge designs between 1928 and 1934, and consequently most versions the model are relatively rare.
Before he went electric in 1965 , Bob Dylan epitomized the hard-traveling folk troubadour, and he established this image largely on a vintage Gibson Nick Lucas model flat-top guitar. The young Dylan had played other Martin and Gibson models in the late ’50s and early ’60s, but in those final years of his acoustic era, before a “blonde on blonde” Fender Telecaster ushered in a whole new folk-rock sound, the Nick Lucas was his instrument of choice. He played this guitar in the studio and on tour from 1963 to ’66, and used it for the legendary albums Another Side of Bob Dylan and Bringing it All Back Home.
Both the original Gibson Nick Lucas model acoustic guitars, and the modern reissues are bound to be some fine, heirloom, and collectable model guitars. These are the types of instruments that one buys for professional work, or simply because you love instruments like this, and can afford them.
